They chose…. poorly… Ideology over security

Europe and California are all now fully reaping the results of their energy policies and reliance on windmills and solar panels instead of good plentiful oil and natural gas. And let’s just say it sucks to be them.

Because not only is the war in Iran sending oil prices skyrocketing, Putin is putting on some flex since he now has Europe by the short hairs.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that Russia could stop selling natural gas to Europe, Reuters reported. New markets are opening up in Asia as a result of the hostilities in Asia, and with Europe being such an unreliable partner as a result of its “misguided policies,” it might be more profitable to supply these new markets, Putin explained.

He says he was just ‘thinking out loud’, but everyone with half a brain knows that he was putting Europe on notice.

The main problem is that Europe pulled attitude about oil and gas because they believed academics (one of the classic blunders) when governments were told that bringing wind and solar on board would be just hunky-dory. Additionally they started shutting down the only truly greenhouse-gas free method of energy production–nuclear.

For years, academics assumed the energy transition would be quick and easy, and so investments in oil and gas would become stranded assets, they argued. European policymakers bought into the hype, and only Norway has any significant oil and gas production.

Back in the US, California’s policies have now made them a security risk to the rest of the country due to their many military bases and ports.

…California pursued very similar policies as those in Europe. After years of anti-fossil fuel policies, the state is now importing more oil and distilled petroleum products than ever before.

The war in Iran is straining global petroleum supplies, and that will lift California’s high fuel costs even higher. The state is home to three major container ports, key military bases, and almost 15% of the U.S. GDP, meaning its energy problems have become a matter of national concern.

“California is not just an energy basket case, it’s also evolved now into a national security risk for the United States,” David Blackmon, an analyst with more than 40 years of experience in the oil and gas industry and author of the Energy Absurdities,” Substack told Just the News.

One thing that this war is doing is underlining the cracks in the security of Europe as well as the US when it comes to not having a steady, internal supply of fuel. It’s also showing how relying on academia, with its biases, can possibly bring down countries due to adherence to a flawed ideology.

  1. “Those who can, do, those who can’t, teach”

    Especially true of academics.

    Theoretical is one thing, reality is another;

    Like this, only with energy

  2. I am pretty sure North America can produce enough energy to meet its demand. If it doesn’t, it is because of policy decisions, not because of supply or capacity.

Europe can deal with bad policy choices on their own.

  3. Not just Europe, India’s ill timed visit and support of Israel is hurting them as well.

“Then there is India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent trip to Israel was ill-timed, coming three days before Israel and the US attacked Iran. Although India is one of the founders of BRICS, he made a big show of elevating the India-Israel relationship from a “strategic partnership” to a “Special Strategic Partnership for Peace, Innovation, and Prosperity.”

India imports 85-88% of it’s oil and with the de facto closure of Hormuz is going to be hurting there. While Russia sells oil to India it was previously at partner/BRICS friendly pricing. No more.

  4. “Those who can, do, then they sell their crap green products to the numbskulls that swallowed the Glowbull Warming agenda while building and launching a new COAL FIRED electricity plant EVERY WEEK since 2011 and they STILL are just barely keeping with rising demand.

Then there’s the EU, in their infinite wisdom, now studying how they can restart the nuke plants they stupidly decommed after Fukishima and the coal plants they shut down to build wind and solar farms after Greta the Mouse shamed them, instead of giving her a spanking and telling her to go back to school.

Also to make up for the shortfall in coal and nuke power the EU converted most of the coal plants to Nat. gas that they decided they could purchase from a homicidal lunatic who wouldn’t ever dream of holding the EU hostage over being being able to run their economies and heat their homes.

Now with the rise of AI, the EU is way Way WAY behind the eightball; actually they’re fooked although they would never admit it publicly, on having enough megawatts available to run data centers, if they even have any.

Meanwhile China and the US are running neck and neck waiting for the first massive grid failure and U.S. citizens are screaming about the cost of the kilowatts to run their homes because the AI data centers are getting much more favorable rates AND sucking up all of the juice.

May you live in interesting times.
