Points of failure for mail in ballots

Yet another postal worker has just been charged for throwing away ballots in a dumpster in Utah. This is NOT an isolated incident.

I think that the biggest issue is that postal workers are now mindless, selfish, ideologically-driven drones. It used to be that delivering the mail was a sacred trust and those workers took their jobs seriously. Now, cash back coupons from Menards can’t even get to their destination because someone nabs them. And workers allow their personal biases and politics to interfere with their duties.

I don’t even like having connecting flights on the few times I have to fly commercial because that’s a point of failure. And the mail system is a lot more complex.

So yeah, getting rid of mail in ballots is necessary to secure our elections. The postal service personnel absolutely cannot be trusted. Every step in their system–where you drop off your mail, where it gets sorted, the various facilities you mail travels through, as well as the supposed deliverer of said mail are all points of failure.

    “Points of failure” really means “Passes through the hands of people who were diversity hires and don’t give a fuck about your mail”

    The mail today, if my box is any indication, is 99% junk mail and political flyers with a few business ads and catalogs thrown in. That’s it.

    Anything I order is delivered by a private service. All my bills are now electronic. If actual real people try to contact me, it’s either phone call, test message, or email. No one but no one sends a letter anymore. If the mail service ended tomorrow the only thing I’d notice is that my trash can doesn’t fill up as fast.

    It’s time for someone to end the US mail system. Even if it takes a constitutional amendment.

    Leaving aside the need for a constitutional amendment to get rid of the Post Awful, there’s another problem. It’s still useful. If it were run better, it would be more useful, true. But: still serves a purpose.
    First: USPS is a major inhibitor of package delivery price gouging. Cheapest for overseas shipping, usually, and in the US the flat rates keep UPS, Fedex, and DHL somewhat under control. Second. Putting your entire life on your phone creates a single point of failure. Having the ability to pay bills (or get them), get or send documents, etc by an alternate, non-electronic means is a good thing, as it backs up a system that can and does fail. Third. It’s a speed bump in the surveillance world. Though not a perfect one, it does help avoid leaving electronic tracks. And a cashed paper check image is pretty damn strong evidence you paid; electrons can be lost or altered. Fourth. It’s a last-resort alert. Mail piling up for a week uncollected is a signal and does generate welfare checks – and sometimes that’s important. One can add other reasons; these are just the top of mind ones. Has the USPS lost importance, and value? Yes. Is it badly run? Yes. Could it be improved? Yes. Nonetheless, it has value, even today.
