Florida is ahead of the curve again…. this time starting the push to get rid of Flock

DeSantis’ Department of Transportation is clearing all state-controlled rights of way and highways of Flock cameras.

The Engineering and Operations Memorandum, signed by Will Watts, P.E., FDOT’s chief operating officer and assistant secretary, directs local agencies to remove the devices within 30 days. If they do not, the department said it will take them down. FDOT reserved the right to immediately remove any unit that poses a safety hazard.

“The purpose of this memorandum is to notify local law enforcement agencies of updates related to the Florida Department of Transportation’s (Department) authority regarding the placement or use of automated license plate recognition systems (LPR) within the right of way of a road on the State Highway System by local agencies,” the memo states.

As a note, this doesn’t include county roads, roads controlled by municipalities, etc.

But…

Several Florida jurisdictions have already paused or canceled contracts amid public pressure. Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco announced last week that he would terminate an agreement covering about 60 cameras on county rights-of-way effective Sept. 30 after county commissioners withdrew support. Other cities and counties, including Oviedo and parts of the Tampa Bay area, have scheduled reviews or votes.

It would be nice if Indiana’s governor would follow suit.

We can’t even get a straight answer out of our local sheriff after one of his guys was caught stalking someone and, per the news, that person is retaining their job.

  1. Well it’s probably for the best… as we here in Florida were just going to remove them OURSELVES.

Ron is… THE MAN. I gotta wonder where he’s headed once he leaves office.
