Re: “unspeakable horror”, I used to work in the transportation industry. We stayed at the same hotel at the away from home terminal every trip. One of the (operators) had an incident as depicted in the second figure. The hotel staff refused to clean it, saved his room for him, and greeted him by handing him the cleaning supplies upon his return.

As a Southerner, I really doubt that many of the men in grey were leftists.

I did a report on the KKK in high school. I remember reading that they were socialists (which, at the time, surprised me). These days, I realize that if you scratch a leftist, you’ll find a racist.
As far as the boys in grey? I doubt most had a political opinion one way or the other beyond protecting their state from Yankee invaders.
