The FDAs loophole—first fake meat, now frankenmilk

Not sure why the head of the FDA isn’t all over this like white on rice, but it seems that lab created Franken-milk is due to hit stores in the US in 2026.

The creator is using the FDA loophole:

The company revealed it has a green light to sell their milk because it is using ‘generally recognized as safe’ (GRAS) ingredients and self-affirming its own safety data.

It’s a common path many new food companies use instead of waiting years for full FDA approval.

You may recall that this process is how we have over 10,000 substances in US foods that are not allowed in foods anywhere else.

IMO, one of the biggest issues is that this stuff will somehow get combined with real milk and the whole milk supply will be adulterated.

    The correct way for the public to handle this is, go to the store, buy it, return it the next day to the store because it’s not milk and tastes horrible.

    Frankly, if his had happened with the other “milks” the soy, almond, and so forth wouldn’t be calling themselves milk.

    This is a ‘courts’ problem, not FDA. FDA and DeptAg have ‘standards of identity’ which define what can be labelled as what. Courts have held that ‘milk’- the word, alone- means cow juice, BUT the qualified noun (xxx milk) is legal to use. Courts aren’t wrong. ‘milk’ IS in fact a generic term for emulsions, not to mention old products like Milk of Magnesia and Rose Milk. So. It is indeed a thorny issue. If, after reading the (very) extensive legal record. you have a clean bright line way to clear this up to the satisfaction of ALL parties, please please please show us. The milk producers would be delighted, as would many others.

    Unferth- much as I agree with you about both the taste and the name, tens of millions of us do not. And those of us who DO agree aren’t bothered enough to take the action you suggest. Sometimes, consumer capitalism just ignores my astute and well founded opinion. The market voted, we lost.

    Another way for the market to speak is to let the product just sit there until it’s past its sell by date and has to be returned to the manufacturer for disposal causing them unexpected losses resulting in bankruptcy.

    Bill Gates, the college drop out, needs to be banned from being anywhere near any issue dealing with climate or food production. Just because he’s rich doesn’t necessarily mean he’s smart instead of lucky.

    Notice that Gates has bought up millions of acres of farmland here in the USA. I haven’t read anywhere that he’s putting it to use growing food crops or animals for consumption. Is he letting it go fallow so that he can promote his franken meat and milk as alternatives to the acreage he pulled out of production?

    No one in history who has had that much wealth has ever been altruistic. They just pretend they are while dreaming up new ways to make more wealth.

      As goes billy “manboobs” gates, we need to stop allowing a college degree to serve as a proxy for, and indicator of, high intelligence. It may have carried that import to some extent back in the day when he attended, but it certainly doesn’t now. College education has become a bad joke, and certainly doesn’t automatically infer superior intellect. More often than not, it is a reliable indication of indoctrination into hive minded group think.

      Having said that, I’d further like to propose that multi-billionaires like gates, soros, bezos, etc. have their fortunes seized and destroyed. Not for purposes of redistributing their wealth, but rather simply to prevent it from being utilized for megalomaniacal, civilization destroying purposes. No one should wield that much influence; yet they can effectively make themselves real life Bond villains. Since we can’t live with them, we should choose to live without them. Their fortunes should be nulled, and they should be banished, to permanently eliminate their influence on society. Nothing of value would be lost.

    Unferth–Or just let it rot on the shelves. But yes, once they allowed a modifier, then the monster was loose.

    doc–Pretty sure it’s not my job to clean this up. The problem is the FDA and the GRAS loophole.

    WDS–Yeah, Campbell is trying to get ahead of that, but they are going to have to prove where they get their meat for their products.

    Nemo–Agreed. And Gates has Evil Overlord delusions of grandeur. And he gets away with it because $$$.

    BRD–Gates, as far as I know, dropped out of college. And no, stealing all of their money is not the answer. For good or for ill, they earned it.

    TRoy–Agreed. And it’s part of the now-dying climate hysteria.

      Naw, I’m gonna insist on the position I’ve staked. As I stated, I don’t want their wealth redistributed. I want it zeroed, because these egotistical fucks use it against the rest of us by buying politicians and funding plans that are utterly (and intentionally) ruinous to humanity. I give zero shits that they “earned” their fortune (much by way of a market that has been gamed in their favor, naturally) in the same way they give zero shits about implementing policy that taxes (read: steals) so much out of what I earned that I end up bankrupt. They have no such concern of being financially ruined, and yet they should, because the fear will help keep them honest.

      They can use their wealth to buy mansions, art, fast cars and hot bitches (as long as they’re over 18, for any aspiring Epsteins) and I won’t care. The moment they express the intent to use it to impose windmills, EV’s, bug meat, carbon taxes on every breath I exhale, and the eye of Sauron fixed upon every moment of my life, all as inescapable government policy forced upon us with no recourse (because voting self evidently doesn’t work) they can go get fucked with a rusty chainsaw.

      So, I’ll be generous and give them an additional choice: if they so much as announce a plan to misuse their extreme wealth in this fashion, we either seize their assets and burn them to prevent said misuse preemptively, or they get an summary execution on live tv. Then we seize their assets and decide what to do with them. Play time is over, and the stuff they are doing now is how you get a French revolution style revolt multiplied by a bolshevik insurgency. I don’t want that, and neither should you. Extreme problems demand extreme solutions.

    Almond, soy, and this “ingredient” milk are NOT milk! Show me a tittie on an almond or a soybean!
    Let the company owners’ FAMILIES drink the stuff for a year or so and then check for any issues!

    Just remember, every drug/product withdrawn by the FDA was once approved by the FDA.

    “ We identified 462 medicinal products that were withdrawn from the market between 1953 and 2013, the most common reason being hepatotoxicity,” meaning liver damage. You need a liver…

      I agree that it’s a pipedream to achieve such an objective via preemptive action. Which is why civil wars and revolutions occur, because problems like these filthy rich busy bodies finally make life so shitty for the masses that a violent uprising becomes unavoidable.

      I’d much prefer to do an orderly housecleaning by selectively taking out bad actors, but almost nobody wants to go for that option because they’ve been steeped in the idea that “we’re better than that” their whole lives. Well, no they aren’t, in point of fact. They’re just too chicken shit to do the dirty work, and then they end up paying a far higher price for their inaction. So we get to do it the hard way, which means a lot more suffering for all of us.
