Painting cows – a long time ago I heard about a guy getting tired of big city folk shooting at his cows. Just before hunting season started he painted COW on the side of all his cattle. No cattle were shot, but he did find a bullet hole in his John Deere tractor.

crazyeighter–Indeed!
Frank–Hopefully the tractor was okay. Those things are expensive.

MWC – the tractor story was something my dad mentioned back in the late 50’s or early 60’s. We used Massey Harris tractors, so I know it wasn’t one of ours. We did get rounds bouncing off the ground around the farmyard during hunting season. I suspect that, if it weren’t for the resulting hullabaloo, he wouldn’t have minded returning fire on some occasions.

Interestingly, there was a study done that involved painting zebra stripes on unstriped animals that determined that the stripes protected them from biting flies, because the boundaries caused the flies to be confused when they were trying to land on them.
