Looking into the connection between mass shooters and antidepressants, a good thing, IMO.
From RFK Jr:
I certainly consider mass shootings a health crisis and we are doing -for the first time – real studies to find out what the etiology of that is. And we’re looking for the first time at psychiatric drugs.
You know these kinds of mass shootings – people have had guns in this country forever. When I was kid we had shooting clubs in our school … there has never been a time in the history of humanity when people walked into a crowd, a church, or a movie theater, or a school, and just started randomly shooting. It’s happening in our country. It’s not happening around the world. And there are many other countries that have comparable levels of guns that we have in this country …
Something changed that dramatically changed human behavior and one of the culprits that we need to examine is whether the fact that we are the most overmedicated nation in the world – and a lot of those are psychiatric drugs that have black box warnings on them – those warnings of homicidal and suicidal ideation.
We are doing those studies for the first time, and we will have the answer.
The connection between medications for mental illness and mass shooters has been posited around the interwebz for quite a while. Right now we have at least four non-gang related shooters who claimed to be trans (a symptom of mental illness) and some of the others were on medication.
I’m thinking that he’s on the right track if only because a quick search is filled with articles trying to pre-emptively debunk this idea.
With the note that correlation does not equal causation, this is something that has needed to be studied for a long time.
In 2004 the FDA put a black box warning on antidepressants.
But yet the medical establishment passes them out like Tic Tacs.
I hope they look at the off-label use by teens and kids of adult approved antidepressants.
