The University of Michigan is getting a close look at their foreign funding. It’s appropriate, IMO, in light of their recent issues with Chinese staff smuggling dangerous fungi into the country as well as another one voting in our elections illegally.
Michigan has a “history of downplaying its vulnerabilities to malign foreign influence” and “recent reports reveal that UM’s research laboratories remain vulnerable to sabotage,” according to the Education Department’s Office of General Counsel (OGC) Chief Investigative Counsel Paul Moore. The Department of Education said that it will look into whether UM is in compliance with federal law after “a review of the university’s foreign reports revealed inaccurate and incomplete disclosures.”
“Unfortunately, tens of millions of dollars in foreign funding in UM’s disclosure reports have been reported in an untimely manner and appear to erroneously identify some of UM’s foreign funders as ‘nongovernmental entities,’ even though the foreign funders seem to be directly affiliated with foreign governments,” Moore said. “OGC will vigorously investigate this matter to ensure that the American people know the true scope of foreign funding and influence on our campuses.”
US authorities charged five Chinese nationals with lying and trying to cover their tracks, more than a year after they were confronted in the dark near a remote Michigan military site where thousands of people had gathered for summer drills.
The five, who were University of Michigan students at the time, were not charged for what happened at Camp Grayling in August 2023. Rather they are accused of misleading investigators about the trip and conspiring to clear their phones of photos, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court.

In 2020, two Chinese nationals who were pursuing master’s degrees at the University of Michigan were sentenced to prison for illegally photographing sites at a naval air station in Key West, Florida.
I’m sure the Autopen Administration was happy to let these things fly under the radar.
