University of Michigan getting the magnifying glass

The University of Michigan is getting a close look at their foreign funding. It’s appropriate, IMO, in light of their recent issues with Chinese staff smuggling dangerous fungi into the country as well as another one voting in our elections illegally.

Michigan has a “history of downplaying its vulnerabilities to malign foreign influence” and “recent reports reveal that UM’s research laboratories remain vulnerable to sabotage,” according to the Education Department’s Office of General Counsel (OGC) Chief Investigative Counsel Paul Moore. The Department of Education said that it will look into whether UM is in compliance with federal law after “a review of the university’s foreign reports revealed inaccurate and incomplete disclosures.”

“Unfortunately, tens of millions of dollars in foreign funding in UM’s disclosure reports have been reported in an untimely manner and appear to erroneously identify some of UM’s foreign funders as ‘nongovernmental entities,’ even though the foreign funders seem to be directly affiliated with foreign governments,” Moore said. “OGC will vigorously investigate this matter to ensure that the American people know the true scope of foreign funding and influence on our campuses.”

The University of Michigan seems to have a problem. Including with their students doing some covert operations.

US authorities charged five Chinese nationals with lying and trying to cover their tracks, more than a year after they were confronted in the dark near a remote Michigan military site where thousands of people had gathered for summer drills.

The five, who were University of Michigan students at the time, were not charged for what happened at Camp Grayling in August 2023. Rather they are accused of misleading investigators about the trip and conspiring to clear their phones of photos, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court.

In 2020, two Chinese nationals who were pursuing master’s degrees at the University of Michigan were sentenced to prison for illegally photographing sites at a naval air station in Key West, Florida.

I’m sure the Autopen Administration was happy to let these things fly under the radar.

  1. One of the things I find very disconcerting, foreign countries, especially China, send their top students here for college while U.S. taxpayers subsidize these “institutions” to the tune of $BILLIONS. So, the U.S. taxpayer is paying to educate our enemies.

Then this morning the news is that CONgress, the Senate in this instance, is STRUGGLING to pass a $9 billion rescission package; that’s the spending package that cuts already approved spending, while the projected deficit is STILL over $3 TRILLION. This package HAS TO BE PASSED before the end of the month, otherwise the money that’s appropriated gets spent.

This is the same old eff u America that we’ve been dealing with almost since the country came into existence.

So, once again, CONgress is bending us over and telling us it’ll only hurt a little and we’ll get used to it.

  2. I have trained at Grayling- it is mostly decommissioned. Nothing sensitive going on there. Funny, though, that they pick that location to spy on. It shows their total lack of awareness. Trespassing on a military base, however, is definitely a serious matter that needs to be prosecuted vigorously. Whoever drooped the ball on that one should be flogged. Something else seems equally, or more troubling. With the high population of certain stereotypically violent nationalities in Flint and Dearborn, it would not be surprising to find more than a few sleeper cells in the state of Michigan.

  3. Nemo- about CONgress… Every time a vote on budgetary concerns leads to hysterical screaming about “government shutdowns”, I always think- “let it shut down- every time they convene, all they do is restrict freedoms, and waste money”. What laws are ever passed that increase our freedoms, or lead to lower taxation? By their very nature, laws exist to prohibit. As the Roman statesman Tacitus said- the more numerous the laws, the more corrupt the state.

  4. @TRoy – Totally agree. We lose nothing by not having a functioning Federal government. The real F U here is even though all of the flunkies are told to stay home, THEY STILL GET PAID.

The only people that should be getting paid during the shut down is the military.

  5. Nemo and TRoy–I don’t get the whole ‘shut down’ hysteria. And no, people shouldn’t get paid if they are staying home (not remote employees). As far as the universities–yes, they get federal dollars and they’re giving away the farm (almost literally). They let these foreign students and staff have the same access as citizens with NO oversight (and no, being a citizen isn’t a criteria for honesty, but auditing and oversight is). I’m a Reagan-era voter (trust yet verify).

  6. My dad went there for his first degree. He could have gone to cal tech but the cost was 100 dollars less and my father’s parents were dirt poor immigrants from Poland. But he did go to cal tech for his second degree and then world war 2 started so he joined the army air force. —(he spent some of the beginning years working on developing the b-29.) i might mention that when i was a polytechnic institute of NYU i also noticed the problems with foreign students that i felt were going to go back to their home countries and use USA technology against us.
