More signs that the Ivies are dying on the vine

Last year Forbes decided to start a list of non-Ivy League schools. Their reason? I’ll paraphrase…

Ivy League grads figure that once they have their credential, then they don’t have to do anything else. And their sense of entitlement is turning employers off. And employers are starting to realize that actual skillsets matter more than the ‘name recognition’ of the school attended.

I think it’s pretty funny that Forbes refers to their ‘New Ivies’ as ‘up and coming schools’ when some have been around for over a 150 years. There is still what I call the ‘elitism factor’ where selectivity is as important as SAT scores (or more important). They aren’t willing to give up the idea that employers look for students from selective schools.

My personal opinion for the impetus behind Forbes’ ‘New Ivies’ is that even they can see the rot that’s permeated the original eight schools and that rot isn’t being swept under the rug anymore.

I just wish they’d come up with a new moniker–‘Ivy’ is so 1700s.

  1. If you see a building covered in Ivy, they usually have a rat infestation.

  2. I received a better (undergraduate) education at Nevada-Reno than I would have at Stanford (I attended both). The difference being that at Nevada, I was taught by faculty – at Stanford I would have been taught by TAs, some of whom had trouble with English. Graduate level is a different story though.

  3. Most college degrees today are worthless and Ivy league is double worthless unless you are inside of their club.

  6. We should refer to them as the “kudzu league”. Because at their root, they are non-native, invasive, and ruinous to the culture, which they choke out by both active attack and slow subversion.

I’d rather attend a Kudzu League school than one of the Ivies.

  8. Ugh… Degree Worship is a thing too. I worked for a major corp that SO worshipped ANY degree… to the point that I reported to a person pulling down a quarter million a year as a “Senior Packaging Scientist”. This person had a Bachelor’s Degree in….? Wait for it…. ANIMAL HUSBANDRY.

  9. Unferth–Very true!

    DougH–True on both points.

Matthew–Exactly. That’s why state governments are starting to do away with credentials as job requirements. When the degree has nothing to do the job, it’s just dumb.

    Stefan–Nice!

Madam Defarge–Definitely it raises a red flag!

BRD–I like it, but maybe the ‘New Ivies’ should be the Kudzu league. We’re common and everywhere…

    TN Budd–With you!

boneman–It really is a thing and yes, leads to stuff like that.
