Last year Forbes decided to start a list of non-Ivy League schools. Their reason? I’ll paraphrase…
Ivy League grads figure that once they have their credential, then they don’t have to do anything else. And their sense of entitlement is turning employers off. And employers are starting to realize that actual skillsets matter more than the ‘name recognition’ of the school attended.
I think it’s pretty funny that Forbes refers to their ‘New Ivies’ as ‘up and coming schools’ when some have been around for over a 150 years. There is still what I call the ‘elitism factor’ where selectivity is as important as SAT scores (or more important). They aren’t willing to give up the idea that employers look for students from selective schools.
My personal opinion for the impetus behind Forbes’ ‘New Ivies’ is that even they can see the rot that’s permeated the original eight schools and that rot isn’t being swept under the rug anymore.
I just wish they’d come up with a new moniker–‘Ivy’ is so 1700s.
