I know where I’m going to start going for my fries

Steak and Shake has announced that they are going with 100% beef tallow by February 25, 2025.

By the end of February 2025, all locations will use 100% all-natural beef tallow.

If veg oil broke your heart, our tallow will make you fall in love again 🍟❤️

I’m 100% in. Plus their cherry cokes are a thing of beauty. And I have great memories of Steak and Shake with my folks and having their Chili Mac.

Steak and Shake hit some hard times, but this might be the key to a comeback.

  1. This is probably enough to get me back into a Steak and Shake. They really took a nosedive here due to a lot of longtime franchise holders just not giving a damn, or so it appeared, based on how they were (poorly) running so many locations. One near me has remained open through it all, while many others around town have closed up shop years ago. Guess I’ll give them another chance on a probationary basis with this news.

I will say Freddy’s (a fairly recent arrival to my fair city) has been a solid stand in – taste and quality wise – for what Steak and Shake used to be when I was a kid. But I’m sure they use vegetable oil for their fryers. There was a place here that closed up a couple of years ago that did fresh cut fries in peanut oil, and those were outstanding. Alas, COVID and (related) chronic staffing issues were the one-two punch that convinced the owners to hang it up.

  2. Fuck Vegans and all their worries.

I’m glad someone figured out what it takes to make decent crispy fries….and they realized that Vegans are not a large part of their target consumer demographic.

I will be giving them a try soon.

  3. BRD–Yeah, S&S really took a hit because of lack-luster franchisees.

B–Yep, fries need beef tallow. I called my local Steak and Shake and the dude that answered hadn’t heard the news but said that franchisees do follow the lead of corporate. So call first to see if they’ve made the switch.

  5. Well… as your local friendly neighborhood non-militant (y’all can go happily rip flesh from bones to your heart’s content, I’ll even COOK it for you) vegetarian (NOT vegan) in the mix, I appreciate the information. 😉

Not that I really frequent such establishments but if I were to go there, fries would have been a viable choice.

It’s been a VERY long time, but I do recall the points of difference in the varied frying “oils” and the flavors, mouth feel, etc., departed in the process. I had neighbors that used to fry EVERYTHING…. in… LARD.

Ever have eggs fried in lard? Seriously…. :-S

I think it will be interesting to see how this works out for them. For folks such as myself, it could be a trend we need to observe with a bit of vigilance should other establishments follow this lead.

And no, you wont see me protesting the switch. I’m sure some Boneheads (I’m in expert in identifying THEM, last name being BONE and all) will. I am all for freedom of choice here.

As to the “Conveniently Quick” Food Emporiums, if you have a Culver’s in your area, they have good stuff… but it’s NOT inexpensive at all. LOL… almost like “Gourmet” fast?

Their frozen custard is to die for… but that’s silly money too. Heck, just about anything is any more.

  6. Ok, now the movie theaters need to go back to using coconut oil instead of whatever petroleum product they now use.

  8. They lost me when they jumped on the order-at-the-kiosk which meant I couldn’t it my way.
