What happens if insurance companies stop covering EVs?

Now this is just a guess on my part.

But right now, a couple of insurance companies have stopped covering some Kias and Hyundais because they are so easily stolen.  It’s simple cost accounting for them–these cars are a losing proposition and so won’t be covered.

And something new has come out about EVs–even after a little fender bender, they basically have to be totaled because there’s no way to figure out if the battery pack has been damaged (and there’s the whole fire issue, but that’s separate).

Battery packs are tens of thousands of dollars to replace, so it’s easier to just write off the whole car.

But wait, there’s more–

“And now those battery packs are piling up in scrapyards in some countries, a previously unreported and expensive gap in what was supposed to be a “circular economy.”

Which is not good for the environment–leaky batteries in landfills–how Green, right?

If the insurers have to start junking more and more cars, especially with the push to move to EVs, then logically, they will have to make a move to stop insuring them or raising rates in order to remain solvent.

  2. Yeah, they'll handle it like storm and flood insurance for coastal property – it'll be run by the govt. Yay. Govt insurance. So good you'll be forced to pay for it.

  4. That's coming. And re Steve's question, if all the providers elect to not insure, the state will have to pick it up through reinsurance corporations.

  5. The left isn't pushing hard for EVs for the environment. The reason for the push is to put a permanent end to ICE technology. The end of oil/gas/diesel for privately owned tranportation. Switching to electric is the con…the carrot they use to fool the gullible into buying their bullshit. Once they've driven a stake through the oil/gas/diesel industry there will be no turning back. EV's can NEVER replace ICE technology…and aren't intended to. The goal is the COMPLETE END of privately owned transport. They want ALL OF US totally dependent on Public Transportation…which THEY control. THAT is the goal behind ALL of this.

  7. Taxpayers already pick up a large portion of the cost of the car. Like all government programs there will be junkyards full of taxpayers money before it's over. Notice how Tesla is the only one that reports sales, I never hear about all the others.
