The Chapel Hill-based school “shall neither solicit nor require an employee or applicant for academic admission or employment to affirmatively ascribe to or opine about beliefs, affiliations, ideals, or principles regarding matters of contemporary political debate or social action as a condition to admission, employment, or professional advancement,” according to the decision, made Thursday.
The University of Texas is scrapping plans to roll out DEI goals/policies. The University of Houston is banning DEI statements for hiring and promotion also. Texas A&M, ditto.
In Florida, they are defunding DEI initiatives.
It’s not just academia, corporate entities are also defunding DEI by default since those programs don’t add anything to the bottom line.
Requiring any statement of opinion for hiring is a bad idea. They might be on board, they might have a more nuanced opinion, they might have no opinion. It doesn’t show if a person will fit in, it will show that a person really wants a job.
