Standard Time Sucks Already

There’s always more animal bodies on the side of road after a time change too.  It makes sense–animals don’t have clocks.  They move according to the sun.  They also probably have some instinct as to when there is a lot of traffic.  So they move at times when there aren’t a lot of cars on the road.  And then we switch it up on them.

Apparently someone did a study and the issue is bigger than my observations.
The study, published Wednesday in the peer-reviewed journal Current Biology estimated that up to 36,550 deer deaths, 33 human deaths and 2,054 human injuries could be prevented annually by halting the switch from daylight saving to standard time in the autumn. Permanent daylight saving time would allow for more light during peak traffic hours.
Indeed, a 2020 study found that fatal traffic accidents in the U.S. rose 6% in the week after daylight saving started. Other studies have found that the switch to daylight saving brings small increases in workplace injuries and medical errors in the days following the change. A 2019 study, meanwhile, found that the risk of heart attacks went up in the week after clocks sprung forward, though other research did not find such an increase.

“Simply put, darkness kills. And darkness in the evening is far deadlier than darkness in the morning,” University of Washington professor Steve Calandrillo said. “The evening rush hour is twice as fatal as the morning for various reasons — far more people are on the road, more alcohol is in drivers’ bloodstream, people are hurrying to get home, and more children are enjoying outdoor, unsupervised play.”

It would be an easy bi-partisan bill to get passed.  But she’s not interested in that.  Enough said.

  1. Having the transition back and forth twice a year gives the criminals two more things to keep the sheeple distracted with. THAT is why they want to keep the time change. While everyone's bitching about it they go blithely on with their crime spree.

  2. I recall back when the second worst president ever was in the white house , they let daylight savings time on all year and decided it was not a good idea because it was too dark out in the mornings and too many kids were getting hit by cars . Let it be standard time that we keep.

  3. danielbarger–I agree. I also think it's to keep people off balance for a couple of days.Ruggles–I'm for Daylight Savings year-round. I think the kids getting hit by cars in the morning was an old wives' tale. Studies since then show that evenings when Standard time goes back into effect is when most accidents happen.

  5. I think that in many latitudes it would be safer for kids waiting for the bus in the morning. In the evening they usually go straight home so dark is less of a problem compared to standing in the dark waiting in the morning!

  6. NFO–It's truly a PITA.Howard–Most of the kids I see are sitting in their parents' cars waiting for the bus. Or else, they have a light or something. But they aren't sitting in the dark or running in the road in the dark. My vote is still for Daylight Savings year around.
