A win for Gibson's Bakery

Hopefully Oberlin College will now just pay up and go bankrupt so that the grounds can be used for something else.

The Ohio Supreme Court is not going to hear an appeal from the college in regards to the $36 million that they owe to Gibson’s Bakery–a five generation owned institution that the college’s personnel maligned, excoriated, and committed libel against for the sin of calling police when their place of business was being shoplifted by Oberlin students (the students were arrested and did confess, by the way).

According to the folks at Legal Insurrection, there is a long, long, long, long shot that Oberlin could try to take this federal.  I’m hoping that Oberlin’s Board of Trustees will finally put a squash on this farce and start figuring out how to go forward.

The college is still maintaining its hypocrisy:

“We remain committed to strengthening the partnership between the College, the City of Oberlin and its residents, and the downtown business community.”

I’m guessing that the town v. gown dynamic in  the City of Oberlin is going to be strained for quite a while.  I’m sure the city counsel is still kissing the college’s ass, but doubt individual businesses are doing so.

  5. Dan–For sure. I think Oberlin had to put it in an account, but they were probably still counting it in their assets. Once it's gone, I do have a feeling they will be too. I don't know their financials, but if they are like other small colleges, they don't have that kind of scratch on hand. So they are going to fight like rabid badgers. If they'd just fired the bint and publicly apologized, it most likely would not have gotten to this point.
