Kudos points all around

A low hours pilot (less than 100 hours) in North Carolina successfully landed his 1967 Aero Commander on a local highway.  If you’ve ever driven state roads/highways in NC on the west side of the state, it’s basically just trees and power lines and no straight lines anywhere.  Vincent Fraser (the pilot) was actually lucky to be above a four-lane with a middle turning lane in that area.

Great job getting on the ground safely, especially without a straightaway, but more kudos need to go to the drivers who saw him coming and got out of the way.

The Swain County (NC) sheriff’s department has posted several videos, including from the pilot’s Go-Pro.  Please note the power lines that the pilot had to miss on his way to his landing point.

Mr. Fraser said he didn’t have time to call 911 (aviate, navigate, THEN communicate).

Nobody hurt and the plane wasn’t damaged as far as I can tell.  It’s a win.

  2. Yeah, but the video from the plane shows the engine running after he landed. So the plane ran out of fuel, he switched tanks and restarted and chose to still land on the road.Points to pilot error. Make no mistake, he did a good job landing. But I question the decision to land with a working engine.
