In honor of Independence Day, I’m going to share some pictures and stories from a recent road trip across the Heartland. This is America and what’s worth fighting for.
I saw the following:
Hay rolls wrapped in American flag colored covering.
Farmers working in their fields.
Families laughing together.
I found that I have more in common with a black man less than half my age than I do with some of my same-hued ‘peers’.
I watched fireflies glowing over cornfields that are miles long.
I passed over mighty rivers.
I visited a graveyard where families honor their dead.
I talked with people who are trying with all of their might to become citizens of the United States because it is the best that the world has to offer.
All of this is America. And America is so much more. There is depth and joy and sorrow. I am blessed to have been born here.
