FINA (international swimming) is changing its rules so that anyone who has gone through puberty as a male cannot compete in their women’s divisions. Which sounds good.
However (and I’m glad they note this in their announcement), they indicate that this is not/should not be an impetus for children to ‘transition’ early.
“They’re not saying everyone should transition by age 11, that’s ridiculous. You can’t transition by that age in most countries and hopefully you wouldn’t be encouraged to. Basically, what they’re saying is that it is not feasible for people who have transitioned to compete without having an advantage.”
But, “the World Professional Association for Transgender Health just lowered its recommended minimum age for starting gender transition hormone treatment to 14 and some surgeries to 15 or 17.”
Don’t know what this group is, don’t care.
FIFA (International Soccer) is leaning the same direction. World Rugby set this guideline a while ago.
They are trying to use science but I can just see the same parents who allow their children to be abused in gymnastics trying to give their kids puberty blockers at early ages just to get them into sports.
