A Tale of Two Techs

MIT has reinstated its SAT requirement for admissions

On the other coast, Caltech is extending its moratorium on SATs as an admissions requirement for another year.  They had already, pre-Covid, eliminated the two subject SAT requirement.

MIT indicates:

At the same time, standardized tests also help us identify academically prepared, socioeconomically disadvantaged students who could not otherwise demonstrate readiness10 because they do not attend schools that offer advanced coursework, cannot afford expensive enrichment opportunities, cannot expect lengthy letters of recommendation from their overburdened teachers, or are otherwise hampered by educational inequalities.

On the Caltech side, they’ve gone the opposite direction:

In lieu of test scores, the Admissions Committee will increase its focus on the review and evaluation of a student’s academic preparedness prior to applying to Caltech.

Of course Caltech has just extended their moratorium another year, leaving the possibility open to reinstate for Fall 2024.

It would be interesting to check back in a couple of years and look at student success at both schools.

  4. MIT got drowned in applications this year. Removing the tests lifted a major barrier to apply for many. Restoring it may brin g their app numbers down to a manageable level, but will likely mess with their ability to admit based on diversity rather than capability.
