B at Middle of the Right sent me an article on Ghost Homes in Chicago. People are, not surprisingly, leaving Chicago by the droves. The weird part is that they have not yet put their houses up for sale. According to the article, they are either keeping them as investment/rental properties or are waiting and are going to sell at a loss–just to get out of the city.
A large portion of them are moving to the ‘burbs in Illinois, but a larger portion are coming into Indiana. What’s funny is that the Chicago people are amazed at the quality of schools in Indiana without the hefty property tax price tag. They were probably astounded at the fact that we have indoor plumbing and hot and cold running water as well.
Interestingly enough, they obliquely refer to freedom as a reason to move into Indiana:
When asked why parents decided to make the move to NW Indiana, several suggested that distance learning simply did not work for their children and admitted that they had looked for schools with the “greatest likelihood of returning to in-person learning.”
Expect the Chicago housing market to have a big crash and for the city to up the taxes on those who cannot leave to make up for the ones they drove away.
