My mom was on a school board. She didn’t run until my sister and I were out of school to ensure that any measures or actions she took would not bounce back onto us. She wasn’t an educator, but she understood clearly what was right. Other school officials really didn’t care for her–at all. Because she did her job and advocated for fiscal responsibility and for the students.
Damn skippy she wouldn’t have allowed kiddie porn in a grade school library. Or allow teachers to denigrate the US or teach CRT by whatever its name is at this point in time.
She took her lumps and paid a considerable social price. Just like the doctor in Illinois did regarding masks.
One thing that has come out of the covid time is that parents are realizing what their students are being taught and they are being engaged in that education, as they should be. Teachers now believe that it is ‘their duty’ to indoctrinate students and make sure that they ‘think correctly’. School boards are supposed to be a stop to this type of behavior. It’s so that local mores and morays are reflected in the local schools.
Because they are not used to having angry parents show up and talk intelligently about curricula, library offerings, and policies. Because they have forgotten their role. Because they have had a small taste of power and found it to be delicious.
If they can’t deal or have such disdain for the parents and their opinions and views, they have every right to quit or not run for re-election.
I’m pretty sure the old sheriff in my town would have told the school board to pound sand.
However, the FBI is going to be treating protests as domestic terrorism.
Wow. Parents are leaving public schools in droves anyway. If you can’t even engage and bring concerns to a fucking school board meeting, what does that say about our government?
