A bunch of folks in Texas entered a sweepstakes for free energy for a year.
Apparently they didn’t read the fine print, because just by entering the sweepstakes, they also had to opt-in to a program that allowed power companies to control web connected smart thermostats.
And now they’re whining because their temperature in their houses were upped to 78 degrees without their knowledge.
It seems that ERCOT doesn’t know much about power grids and/or the ephemeral nature of sun and wind power and are fucking up by the numbers.
But that doesn’t take the idiocy of the people involved out of the equation either. A while back there was a study that had students signing up for a fake social media site–the Terms of Service required them to give up their first-born children and said that all of their information would be given to the NSA. Police run stings by contacting folks who have broken parole to let them know they’ve won a prize.
What ERCOT did was just a play on some old and new scams.
