Not surprising, but unfortunate

Asheville, NC used to be a great place to visit.  Pretty hippy-dippy with a lot of silver spoon miscreants living the life in the mountains.  Spas, boutiques, and some excellent chocolatiers (The Chocolate Fetish is a fave of mine) and a fantastic indy bookstore, Malaprops.

But, as with hippy dippy places everywhere, they’ve defunded their police.  And they’ve lost 84 officers in a year.  And, not surprisingly, Asheville is now in the top ten percent of the most violent places in the US–twice the national average.

It’s gotten so bad, that the Asheville Police Department has sent out a list of things that will or will not merit a police response (essentially they are rationing their police).

Very sad and I’m glad that Chocolate Fetish ships, or they will until they are forced out by crime and violence.

  1. When 1/3 of the force leaves, that should tell you something… SHOULD… sigh

  2. It should. Asheville relies on tourism. If that goes bye-bye because of crime and violence, so dies the town.
