Defining definitions and circular logic

In order to state or set forth the meaning of a word, you can’t use that word to define or describe itself.

Apparently the foremost ‘expert’ in anti-racism hasn’t learned that lesson.  Someone asked Ibram X. Kendi to define racism.

You’d think that this would have been a pretty easy question for someone who throws the term at everything hoping it’ll stick.

Here’s his educated answer:

“I would define it as a collection of racist policies, that lead to racial inequity, that are substantiated by racist ideas.”

So ergo, anti-racism, according to Dr Kendi, would be:

“Anti-racism is a collection of anti-racist policies leading to racial equity that are substantiated by anti-racist ideas.”

Stunning erudition.

Please note that he is a professor at Boston University, has authored five books, and has garnered a shite-ton of awards.

And that’s the best he could come with for a definition of a term upon which he’s banked his entire career.

He’s certainly no Elie Wiesel.

  2. Yeah, but maybe all of them should be asked to really define what they are talking about. It calls them out….
