So the Indiana governor’s speech wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be (only two sports metaphors). But his ‘releasing of mandates’ isn’t solving any problems, as far as I can see.
The IN dept of health has created color coded maps based on specific criteria that are connected to freedom in a particular county. Those are being maintained as ‘guidelines’.
The problem with those maps is that from week-to-week the number of clients in a business at a time, the number of spectators at a sports event, etc, can change. So businesses can’t plan ahead. Neither can the people. The county that I’m in slavishly follows those guidelines and, in fact, took the level up unnecessarily for further controls for several weeks. Let’s just say I’m not hopeful they’ll just leave shit alone. This is the braintrust that has had the wrong title on one of their graphs since this began and they refuse to change it.
He also said that students are going to have to continue to wear masks until the end of this school year. Well, again in my county, drug overdoses and suicides are climbing to epidemic levels. Gee, I wonder why? Combining everyone looking like an extra from Mortal Kombat with no other outlets, kids will spiral into themselves. And they are fucked until June.
The timing of the mandate changes is due to the NCAA tournaments that were held in Indianapolis (so we need to keep the entire state under heel because basketball).
But here’s the big kicker. He’s not ending the state of emergency because it would keep Indiana from getting federal dollars in the latest CARES act. So he, along with our legislature, are fully prepared to sell Hoosiers’ freedoms.
Scary and we’re supposed to be slobberingly grateful for the small changes that will change nothing.
