So what makes gay marriage so different?

Liberals  tend to tout the not-in-the-Constitution but much halliballoed separation of church and state for pretty much everything.  So what makes gay marriage different?  This should be a clear case of the government getting out of marriage, putting the license on a personal unit-establishing contract, and leaving sanctification to the churches to perform according to the tenants of that faith.

It would not matter as to the gender, sex, or number of the parties involved in the “family-contract” unit and as long s the proper paperwork was done, it shouldn’t be an issue with insurance  or other legalities.
