The Wrath of Khan

So last night B and I went to see the Wrath of Khan on the big screen. What made the night memorable was the Q/A afterwards with William Shatner.

My long time readers may have intuited that I am a sci-fi nerd and the original Star Trek was my gateway drug. When it was already in re-runs and played after the news on our local channels, my mom let me stay up to watch it–unusual when my childhood bedtime was 8:00 pm.

So Mr. Shatner was part of my growing up. From the Twilight Zone, to Star Trek, to TJ Hooker, to Denny Crane, to guest shots on various Canadian TV shows like the Murdoch Mysteries and Haven–loved him in all of them.

We got tickets in March and were front row center. Literally. To see him in person (and yes, we paid the extra to get a picture with him) was truly amazing. At 95, the fact the he’s doing a tour and going from town to town every night, plus podcasts, plus singing, he’s a force of nature.

While it was a bit disappointing not to really be able to interact with him, I am content, even though I cried when Spock died at the end of the movie (I always do, every single time).

  1. I grew up watching the original Star Trek, too, but never really got into it beyond that. Sci-fi is not really my thing. I also saw the original Star Wars in the theater when it came out. Meh… That dang Shatner, though- has to have more in royalty income than any actor in history- he advertises EVERYTHING. I’ve even seen him advertising for local Indiana attorneys.

I grew up in a household dominated by a benevolent dictator who considered all sci-fi programming to be “pipe dreams” and would not allow them. So I came to Star Trek late in life and still not sure I’ve seen ’em all.

    Miss ya, Dad.

  3. By far, Khan was the best Star Trek. And Shatner’s best performance. Could only have been better if Montalbán had been there as well.
    This is my envious face.

  4. Bill is a long time vegetarian (if memory serves). I as well cut me teeth on the O.S. in it’s first run. In fact, I believe it was the season that premiere with “Spock’s Brain” that they pushed the time from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM… past my bet time… so I snuck out and LISTENED to the show from the top of the stairs out of sight from my folks….

    Damn I’m olde…..

One of Shatner’s greatest roles was playing… Shatner at a Star Trek con on Saturday Night Live.

    “Get a life!”

    I would never have guessed.

  7. Star Trekkin’ across the universe,
Only going forward, still can’t find reverse.

Getting pictures with Shatner would have been well worth the money.

Wrath of Khan was the second best Star Trek movie. Galaxy Quest was the best. 🤣

  8. Got to see him in the stage play of Arsenic and Old Lace in Dayton Ohio, early 70s.
