Fun story: My grandad worked for Ma Bell in NYC for decades and when they relocated to rural SC, they got hooked up to a party line on the old country road. He was pissed.

My phone journey began with my Mom who worked for the phone company as a switchboard operator.
Our phone line at the time was a four party line. When we moved to our first and only home, we had a two party line for several years. The other party, an old woman, spent hours of every day on the line talking with the few friends she had left.
My cell journey began with 4. I used it for a long time. I didn’t switch to a smart phone until just a couple years ago and am on my second one. I’m NOT tethered to it. Location services is always off. Unless I’m home, the phone is always off.

I didn’t get to these until this AM…. so I will comment on _one_ only…
I don’t know why… but the marbles in a jar meme pulled on a VERY nebulous recollection from what I _THINK_ may have been either the Movie or the TV series “Please Don’t Eat The Daisies” where one of the youngsters had added their entire marble collection to the contents of the BRAND NEW and VERY NOVEL (for the time!) ELECTRIC “Dish Washing Machine” and fired it off…
See if you can’t conjure a graphic on THAT!

Joe–I’m thinking about going back to that. And yes, rotary phones are confusing to those who don’t know.

In England, back in ’59, the English Manor we rented (two G.I. families out of Bentwaters RAFB) had a DIRECT line to the switchboard. Our phone line did NOT have a dial, it was “drop signaling” (look it up!) and we had to tell the Operator whom we were trying to reach. BTW, I was 6 at the time and didn’t understand what was going on – I’m now a Network Engineer (retired) and would have LOVED to examine in detail the phone exchange!
