SNAP and sunlight

The Dems might have shut down the government to gin up support for their party during the 2025 elections, but I think the law of unintended consequences bit them in the butt.

According to the head of the USDA, they found, not completely surprisingly, that there were 5,000 dead people receiving SNAP money and there were over 500,000 (yep over a half a million) people getting benefits twice. Eighty percent are capable of working and don’t meet the opt-out criteria but have never been made to abide by the law.

It’s as broken as Social Security, if not more. It’s been the bread in ‘bread and circuses’ for decades now.

  1. That’s the issue with Government Giveaway Programs.

No one ever does the cleanup, they just beg Congress for more money. And usually get it.

And, of course, more “participants” means more opportunities for Graft in the distribution. No one wants to stop the Gravy Train.

’tis more like USAID than Social security in that regard.

  3. B–A much better analogy. And government giveaways mirror government agencies. Don’t find efficiencies, just ask for more taxpayer money.

Bigus–Yep. Everyone needs to re-apply to get benefits.

  4. Oh, the humanity! Why, people are going to starve and DIE if this program is cleaned up according to every Demonrat in the House and Senate.

Can’t have their voters starving and dying now can we? Why they might lose a few house and Senate seats if we allow THAT to happen.

    1. Nemo–It looks like they found almost 200,000 dead people and that’s just from red states. Blue states refuse to turn over their information. But they are also saying that every single person is going to have to reapply. Of course they’ll probably maintain status quo during that time.

  5. @Nemo “Can’t have their voters starving and dying now can we? ”

Why not? If dead people can get SNAP benefits and vote, then who cares if they are alive, dead or something in between? You have to admit, dead constituents are a lot less bothersome than live ones who whinge, want things and have to be pandered to. Where is the downside?

(The Internet desperately needs a sarcasm font for times like this).

  6. Someone applied for unemployment benefits in my name (and possibly with my SS#). So the state agency contacted me at my known mailing address rather than whatever address the scammer used. I’ve now contacted the agency 4 times to tell them it must be fraud since I’m still employed and I never filed for it. And yet they are still sending me notices that all they need is one or two more pieces of info before they can start mailing checks. They have a dedicated fraud line but it must not be doing anything. It’s like they are set on one mode only – pay out regardless. Ridiculous. I’m half expected to start receiving govt checks any day now. God only knows how much graft and corruption are going on in all govt agencies at this point. I’d estimate 50% or higher. It’s like they aren’t even trying to hide it anymore.

  7. Phil B–Interesting thought!

Don–Yeah. It’s like the Treasury had everything on autopay–no checking, no validation. Just money out the door.
