The UN–Money Grab, World Domination, or Relevancy?

Not sure how this came about, but apparently the UN has decided it’s going for world domination and is starting with a tax on global shipping under the supposed aegis of a ‘carbon tax’ to fight non-existent climate change/global warming/whateverthehelltheycallittoday.

The original vote got put on hold, but they aren’t letting it drop.

from the National Review:

This tax is especially egregious because it is a violation of the sovereignty of the U.S. and other nations. A U.N. international body would be imposing a tax on Americans, something that appears to be a first. The tax, according to the State Department, could increase global shipping costs by 10 percent or more.

It’s also yet another example of Europe and the U.N. trying to dictate the domestic climate policies of other countries. The State Department made it clear that it understood the fundamental problem this posed when it stated that the U.S. would penalize nations “that sponsor this European-led neocolonial export of global climate regulations.”

Fortunately, the Trump administration helped to delay a vote on the IMO tax plan for a year, but it is still looming. A tax delayed is not a tax canceled. (Emphasis added.)

The original ‘vote’ to delay this travesty was relatively close. I believe the only way to maintain US sovereignty is to quit the UN and throw them out of NYC. Because they’ll just keep trying.

  1. no one would be in the UN if it was not in NY

  2. With the recent events in NYC I would not at all be surprised to see if this does not embolden the UN.

Do they still do that “Trick Or Treat for UNICEF” thing? I remember doing that when I was a kid… and not at all (at the time) understanding _WHY_

Nope, the UN is trying to get money to distribute to their leaders and the leaders families.

Once DOGE cut of the USAID money faucet, they have to find a way to raise money to fund their lifestyles and the lifestyles of their extended families since the US taxpayer isn’t doing it any more.

    Don’t be fooled.

boneman–It might, but all of the interaction is on the federal level. Doesn’t discount back room meetings of course.

B–Agreed. They have to be scared that the money tap has been turned off.

  5. …and Trump told them where they could stick their tax, as should every other country that’s a member.

How, exactly, do they think they’re going to be able to enforce the tax on shippers that tell them same thing, when country’s are stiffing them on members fees and have been almost since the UN same into being?

When you look up useless in the dictionary, there’s a picture of the UN building in the body of the definition.

It should be disbanded for all of the good they do. If it wasn’t for the U.S. paying their tribute, they couldn’t keep the lights on.

After that bush league play; stranding Trump and Melania on the escalator this year, I’m kinda surprised Trump hasn’t told them to GTFO of dodge. Maybe he’s saving that as a parting shot on the way out the door in ’28, assuming he doesn’t run again.

I love that one. The stupid Demonrats and fake news STILL don’t get that he’s trolling them when he says he’s thinking about running again in ’28. The best part is, he does it with such an earnest straight face, they think he’s serious.

The UN are like their EU cousins that tried to regulate the curve in bananas sold in EU grocery stores. Imbeciles, only there for the grift.

Too many people are completely unaware that the U.N. was established as an afterthought, basically, following WWII.

The “United Nations” was how FDR spoke of the allies opposing the axis powers.

The U.N. that today sits in NYC was envisioned as basically making the post-WWII peace… permanent, more or less.

The Orwellian U.N. of 2025 was inconceivable to those well-intentioned naifs who put it together.

(Imho, it’s an understandable thing: After all, the U.S. economy at that time dominated the world, and the U.S. military at that time dominated the world. No one in 1948 was imagining nor planning for the rise of OPEC; and the fall of the West to the global jihad; and other things, eg, drone-equipped illicit drug distribution cartels.)

    1. I beg to differ. Typical NPC’s couldn’t have foreseen it becoming a monstrosity, because they can’t foresee jack shit, apparently. Anyone with actual intelligence could have predicted the UN would end up as it has, because all institutions fall victim to this effect. Mission creep, ever expanding budgets and staff, and ultimately, whatever their stated reason for existence actually was, gets subsumed by the all consuming inherent drive for an institutions survival.

Too many paychecks and well funded lifestyles are dependent on it to risk it ever shrinking, much less ceasing to exist altogether. And I’ve not even touched on the sociopaths who get involved because nothing animates their existence like the ability to exert control over others.

This unchecked growth – ala metastatic cancer – is an innate characteristic of all such organizations. Always has been, always will be. I also don’t ascribe any honorable motives to those who founded the UN. They were of the same basic type and mindset as those we see ruining the world now. Leftists and globalists with bad intent, who I’m certain fully meant to create what they anticipated would become another layer of extortionate and oppressive governance over as much of the planet as they could manage. FDR was a giant leftist piece of shit, and was very much in this mindset. So were many of his contemporaries the world over.

  11. The UN is pernicious, insidious, and full of scum- sucking self-delusional morons. And those are its best features. Should have been disbanded shortly after WWII ( shortly after it was created), but, as the world’s new policeman; it lended some legitimacy to give everyone a seat at the table, and a vote on various imbecilic plans to “better the world”.

  12. The UN’s International Maritime Organization, specifically, is a massive European transnational group that is wildly anti-American.

We should be very clear, the IMO tax is meant to greenwash dirty money and further cut American trade, but the real sand in the vasoline here is that some of the conspirators themselves are American shipowners who only operate outside the US. The IMO tax is a great way to shift some of their tax burden onto consumers.

John Konrad, a fellow American merchant mariner, has written fairly extensively on the matter.
