Thursday Meme Drop

For my male readers (which is most of my readership), it’s how girls pierced their ears back in the day.

  1. Nice collection. I especially liked the “let’s negotiate” and the five horsemen. I’ve been of the opinion, for a long time, that the 19th Amendment has done us in.

  2. Anglo Saxon dude also missed out on working at carnivals, living in trailer parks, and watching professional wrestling.

  6. #19. My mom only ever bought Roman Meal bread … but, yes. That was the only bread like product we ever had.

#4. I was shopping at a big box store and over heard a late middle-age woman saying, “I don’t love my family THAT much.”

  7. B.C.–He’s only a little younger than Keith Richards.

Unferth–We got bread from the day-old bread store and it was generally frozen for a couple of months. For #4 I was thinking CaddyShack (you’ll get nothing and you’ll like it!).

  8. Ah yes, spun-sugar white Wonder Bread! The most useful substrate for anything from a PB&J to growing mold for a science experiment.

Even the bags were iconic (and ubiquitous). Used for lunch sacks, single-use galoshes, leaky, cumbersome water balloons, and, in a pinch, condoms (back when men were men and giants trod the earth).

  9. That’s the way my cousin pierced MY ear back in the day.

  10. Harbinger–Yep, my childhood (minus the condoms). And for those, men would have to be giants!

Dave–Definitely old school! It took a professional piercer over an hour an ear to pierce my ears the second time to try to get them even.

  15. About the bolt cutters on the meter box:
I used to work as a siding installer. We would pull the meter box loose from the wall, wrap twine around the screws in the back so they wouldn’t fall inside the box, install the siding, then call the electric company to re-install the meter box. Once we did a duplex that was unoccupied on one side, so the double box only had one meter installed. I only wrapped twine around one set of screws where there was a meter. Yes, that led to much excitement!

  17. #11–I’m sure I’m not the only one who pronounced it like a German, as “Yunkernecking”.
Last one–that’s how I first got my ear pierced, in about 1981, and I’m definitely not a girl!
