HUD is going English-only

In a step in the right direction, the Department of Housing and Urban Development is only using English for its services. The only exceptions will be for the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Violence Against Women Act.

“Following [the president’s] Executive Order Designating English as the Official Language of The United States, HUD will solely use English for all Departmental business and services,” Turner posted to X. “We are one people, united, and we will speak with one voice and one language to deliver on our mission.”

According to the article, the department was fielding over 200 languages. Can you imagine the money that will be saved just by not having translators?? If you can’t speak English then you don’t get service. It’s really just that simple.

  1. …hundreds of Executive Orders that should be codified into law and where is CONgress and the Senate … why they’re on vacation for the rest of the summer.

Meanwhile judges appointed by Trump are not being reviewed and voted on either. Yet, we keep sending the same miscreants back to DC to “represent” us when they spend the bulk of their time either on vacation or “back in their districts campaigning”.

    What a friggin’ racket.

  2. Outstanding. There should be a sign above every door:

“Nosotros somos los Estados Unidos Americanos: ACQUI HABLAMOS INGLES. APRENDA Y USA LO!”

    😉

Oddly enough, my attempts to learn the French language in school was an abysmal failure… but for reasons I still cannot fathom to this day, I had a bizarre aptitude for learing Spanish.

I can still hold my own conversationally if I need to. My “formal” training was over 40 year ago en la esquela secondaria (High School)

LOL… to see the eyes widen whenever I have contractors or workers in home and I bust out the H.S. Spanish in greeting them…

Uh Oh! El Hombre De Casa… “Man of the House”… knows the language. WATCH what you say boys!

    Fun stuff.

  3. The only time you should get a translator is if you are charged with a crime…and that only for the trial.

  4. oddly enough, you need to speak, read and write english to become a citizen i do believe. and exception is made for those over 65. sooooooo, why is hud giving any service to anyone under 65 who cant understand english? only citizens should get government services. the folks who are handing out the goods and services to their ethnic buddies need to be fired.

  5. My grandparents all spoke English with zero accent though they born in Poland (except my greadma on my mother’s side) were born in Poland. They certainly did not learn English in Poland. I guess they must have cramed to learn english before they got citizenship.

  6. B – Even if someone is accused of a crime, if they need a translator, it should be out of their pocket, not the tax payers. I doubt any other country would provide translators for people who didn’t speak their language.

Boneman1959 – I recently had a situation where a company sent some contractors to do some work for me. No one on the crew spoke English. In fact, the foreman kept calling his wife and asking her to translate. I sent them away. Probably should have call ICE instead.

  7. Every piece of mail sent from fedgov has 2½ pages solely for listing the over twenty languages available. Interpreters are provided as needed. The taxpayers pay for that.

Adding on to Silliest’s comments, a carload of illegals said my truck hit them while parked. The head guy called his wife then tried to hand me his phone to speak with her. Her first words were, You owe $750 for hitting the car. She spoke perfect English, no accent. After I laughed, my only words were, Why’d you marry a beaner?

I had CBP on speed dial. They hurriedly took off before so could connect the call.

Incidentally, all of my grandparents were born in the old country. My paternal grandma never learned to speak English. Same for many aunts and uncles. Grandma became a recluse after her husband died. Kin took care of her.
A rough and bitter life, they had been well to do white Russians.

  8. Nemo–It’s beyond criminal. Like the Dems running from the Texas House to prevent things from getting done. But this is supposedly the GOP’s call.

boneman–A friend of mine speaks fluent Spanish but doesn’t look like she should. Freaks folks out all of the time.

B–And only if you’re a citizen or legal visitor.

    wildman–And therein lies the question…

    avraham–Most likely.

Silliest–Excellent point. And maybe you should have, but hindsight is 20/20.

Rick–And it shouldn’t be the taxpayer dime for sure. Sounds like a rough time for them later.
