Having your cake and eating it too

When is a spouse not a spouse? In the case of AOC, it’s when the ‘spouse’ accepts gifts or wants access to non-public areas of the Capitol. However, not-a-spouse when it comes to financial disclosures.

“The Ethics Committee rebuked Ocasio-Cortez for her dual-use of the term ‘spouse’ to define her relationship with Roberts deep in the footnotes of the committee’s July report ordering Ocasio-Cortez to repay $3,000 in impermissible gifts she received when she attended the 2021 Met Gala in her infamous ‘Tax the Rich’ dress,” the report said.

“The Committee further notes that at the same time Representative Ocasio-Cortez was seeking to take advantage of exceptions to the Gift Rule only applicable to spouses and/or certain relatives, she was not disclosing Mr. Roberts’s financial interests as is required of Members who are legally married,” the committee wrote.

The report said literally no information is available about Roberts, where he works, his business ownerships, debts, assets and stock market trading activity.

“Federal laws that require the spouses of lawmakers to disclose their financial affairs to the public exist to prevent congressional spouses from profiting from their partner’s position in Congress or from being used as a pass-through to influence legislation,” the report said.

Let’s call it what it is: fraud. Even if they are engaged, dude is not her legal spouse. Therefore it’s an all or nothing. The fact that she’s being allowed to cut this definition in a way that benefits her, is beyond reprehensible. And the fact that Congress isn’t doing anything speaks to its internal corruption.

  1. It takes a sense of justice to enforce standards and rules. “Balls”, some might say. That may be asking to much from our political class. The dude Roberts likely has his stowed in AOC’s purse. If she were to go looking for them in the dusty lower regions of the handbag, they likely would be confused with an old lost raisin or some other such difficult-to-identify dessicated formerly viable organic material.

  2. here a question, how does a bimbo bartender with a 430 credit score become rich ? last I read she has a net worth north of
    25-26 million ? and it what 6 years now, maybe 7 ?
and I also read stories how she used to “steal ” the tip jar all for herself instead of sharing it.
but now she all for ‘helping others” right.

  5. TRoy–I don’t care where her boyfriend’s stones are hidden, it’s Congress that’s not enforcing their own rules. It seems to be a thing. Don’t enforce what’s there, just make new rules to make something illegaler.

    dave–She plays the game …

bk–They seem to be lower-intellect than her.

    steves–The fact that it went public…. 😉

  7. This is why I’m still wondering Senator Robert Menendez really did. The pretext is the type of crime that routinely gets swept under the rug. Did the good senator threaten to cut the wrong department’s budget?

It’s funny how “marriage” is the standard. For the most part, the left doesn’t care about marriage anymore. The majority of left-leaning young couples that cohabitate that I know are not married. The majority of conservatives ones that I know are married.

  8. steves–Thanks! 🙂

TRoy–Some are getting disabused of that notion.

Unferth–I don’t care if they are legally married or not. However, if he gets the benefits, he should also get the rest. Splitting definitions is annoying.
