We knew they were cooking the books on jobs

The Commissioner on Labor Statistics has just formally become an unemployment number. And it’s about time.

Remember the saying about ‘it’s not the votes that matter, it’s who’s counting them’ (I’m paraphrasing), yeah, it can be applied to any entity that’s popping out ‘official’ numbers.

Taylor Budowich, the White House deputy chief of staff and cabinet secretary, said the BLS commissioner was fired for routinely getting economic data wrong:

Wrong. She was fired after consistently getting it WRONG. You don’t get to be this bad at your job and keep it. She was missing the mark for more than a year by HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF JOBS. Unacceptable. Policy makers look to these reports to inform decisions (like rate cuts by the fed). We need accuracy, and President Trump will restore competency and accuracy to this critical agency.

Trump wrote:

I was just informed that our Country’s “Jobs Numbers” are being produced by a Biden Appointee, Dr. Erika McEntarfer, the Commissioner of Labor Statistics, who faked the Jobs Numbers before the Election to try and boost Kamala’s chances of Victory. This is the same Bureau of Labor Statistics that overstated the Jobs Growth in March 2024 by approximately 818,000 and, then again, right before the 2024 Presidential Election, in August and September, by 112,000. These were Records — No one can be that wrong? We need accurate Jobs Numbers. I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified. Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they can’t be manipulated for political purposes. McEntarfer said there were only 73,000 Jobs added (a shock!) but, more importantly, that a major mistake was made by them, 258,000 Jobs downward, in the prior two months. Similar things happened in the first part of the year, always to the negative. The Economy is BOOMING under “TRUMP” despite a Fed that also plays games, this time with Interest Rates, where they lowered them twice, and substantially, just before the Presidential Election, I assume in the hopes of getting “Kamala” elected – How did that work out? Jerome “Too Late” Powell should also be put “out to pasture.” Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Between the BLS and the Fed mucking about with stats and rates, they’ve done their best to either be kingmakers or usurpers.

  3. This agency has been consistently screwing with the number since forever. I fail to understand why they can’t use anonymized payroll data from ADP, APS and the rest. Why do we employ a bunch of bureaucrats to camp on the phone calling companies to ask them how many people they employ and if they hired or fired anyone in the last month. Ludicrous.

I’m sure the kids at DOGE could whip up a secure program in a couple hours that we could use to collect the all of the existing data AND fire all of these freeloaders at BLS.

  4. The initial numbers were off? Say it ain’t so!

I seem to recall some of the revisions changed numbers by an order of magnitude or more. Hardly a rounding error.

  5. With apologies to Disraeli and the others to which this has been attributed…There are 3 kinds of lies: Lies, damn lies, and (government) statistics. It is important to maintain consistency from month to month so that trends, etc can be tracked, etc. but it is also important to NOT MANIPULATE DATA to meet your own political needs. And sorry, every employer in America, including the above-board self-employed, interacts/files with the worthless government every two weeks or at least once a month. There is NO EXCUSE for government not having nearly accurate data ALWAYS. If their nonstop tyranny and intrusiveness into our lives, our businesses, our bank accounts, etc can’t deliver accurate data, then let’s END THE TYRANNY. Or better yet, JUST END THE TYRANNY.

  6. Government numbers are always in question when they can’t balance their own checkbook.

crazyeighter–That word did seem to be thrown around a lot…

Nemo–Agreed. It’s almost like they use outdated processes just so they provide a justification for their jobs and so they can modify the data easier.

Gerry–Yes, their figures were definitely off by magnitudes.

MrLiberty–Agreed. And as a person who works with data, I would never change it to meet an expectation. Did not gain me friends and got me canned once.

    TRoy–Good example!
