USDA–Moving USDA folks to the heartland

Right now there are 4,600 USDA employees who live and work in the DC area. Thus adding to the administrative bloat and echo chamber that is the Nation’s Capital.

In a move (literal) that makes sense, almost half are going to be moved out of DC.

Rollins identified the five hub locations as Raleigh, North Carolina; Kansas City, Missouri; Indianapolis, Indiana; Fort Collins, Colorado; and Salt Lake City, Utah. She also listed several D.C. office spaces USDA will be vacating altogether, identifying just two offices the federal agency will be keeping.

Rollins noted that the vast majority of USDA employees are already located outside of D.C., but she said this move “continues to best position USDA closer to our core constituents.”

All federal agencies need to follow suit. If federal employees aren’t exposed to other opinions or see first-hand how ‘the other half lives’, then they become myopic.

Of course a side benefit to this announcement is the ones who don’t want to move will quit. It’s a win-win.

  1. “How the other half live” … I think that is THE thing that irritates me the most about the incredible string of federal funding corruption. Too many people associated with various governments — at all levels — have no clue about what it is to have an honest job and be paid [only] a fair wage.

I’ve lived in two different small towns (pop <30K and ~10K) and the government employees / officials were taking home north of $150K a year (in one case, their average constituent made less than $30K a year).

In one of the small towns, the city was to make a land-swap and when the dust settled, the mayor's wife ended up owning the land the city was supposed to get. It only became common knowledge when someone tried to buy the land for $9 million and the mayor's wife insisted on getting 10.

On the one hand, scattering these people to the four-winds sounds like a great idea, but they'll probably just create their own little protected enclave to protect themselves from having to deal with the commoners. Much better to just fire them all and make them try to make an honest living.

  2. Or you could just shut the unconstitutional agency down and keep the government OIT of our food supply. I can guarantee that in the absence of organized corruption and protectionism, the free market would deliver far superior inspection folks and address the other ‘services’ that are ACTUALLY needed.

Not only will they be able to service their customers better, it will cost us less because any govt employee in the DC area receives a 34% payroll surcharge because it costs so much to live there.

  5. They are being moved to large cities. Put them in places like Dodge City Kansas, York Nebraska. Smaller farming communities away from the cities.

  10. Unferth–Look on the bright side… maybe they’ll quit instead of having to move.

    MrLiberty–Agree.

Bigus–It needs to be all of them.

    crouse–Exactly!

Gregg and Gary–I think smaller towns would be better also.

    crazyeighter–something like that!

Gary and crazyeighter–If they were like Mr Kimball at least they’d be in the field, not in their offices.

  11. The majority of DC employees could be canned. The work is done by people in places like Bellville, Texas – look it up.
