I was today years old when I learned..

That Tom Lehrer wrote the ‘e’ song for The Electric Company.

I only know him as the guy who wrote the Masochism Tango.

Apparently he also taught mathematics at MIT back in the day and is quite the political satirist. He put all of his songs into the public domain in 2022.

Interesting….

  1. Get Tom Lehrer’s boxed set. Three CDs of amazing songs. “Poisoning Pigeons in the Park” and other light-hearted classics. Absolutely wonderful. Lehrer was a gifted genius.

  2. I hadn’t thought about that song (silent e) in about 45 years now. I do remember it on viewing again now. That 70’s incarnation of the Electric Company had some strange stuff, especially with the weird (and sometimes off-putting) video animations provided through the use of Scanimate machines (these are an interesting subject in themselves, look it up on YouTube if curious about how many TV special effects were done in the 70’s). Sesame Street in the same era had a number of really odd short segments as well.

Anyone else here remember Letter People Land? That was kind of a unusual educational show for kids. Didn’t know it until a few years ago, but it was produced by KETC channel 9, the PBS affiliate out of St. Louis, MO, and widely distributed around the country.

And yes, Tom Lehrer did some great stuff.

  4. Not “was” – he is still with us.

I first heard him when I was last week years old in 1954 and a senior in high school. I still remember my reaction to The Boy Scouts Marching Song, Be Prepared.

  5. You could always tell when the local college chemistry midterms were coming up because the Dr. Demento show would be inundated with requests for the element song.

  6. Daniel Radcliffe is a huge T.L. fan. I recall a group doing a skit on The Gong Show to the Vatican Rag that was hysterical. I was unaware he wrote the E Company theme.

Way cool… and he’s still plodding along in his late 90’s God Bless him!

BRD–I don’t remember the letter song. And yes, the animations were something along the lines of an acid trip (so I’m told).

Nancysjet–I completely forgot about that one–it’s hilarious!

Old Guy–I went through and fixed my verbs–thanks for letting me know!
