Electricity: Back in the ’90s, I was working in a telecom NOC one weekend. I got a direct customer service call from the head of the IT department for an Illinois hospital – his DDS circuit wasn’t working.
I checked the system, and it was down at his end, and I told him so. He was dubious, so I told him to tell me what error message was displaying on his terminal.
“I don’t know. I can’t see anything”
“What?”
“It’s dark in the there; the power is out in the whole city.”
“Well, sir, that would be your problem.”
“It is?”
“Sir, electrically operated equipment generally operates better with electricity applied.”
“Oh.” Pause. “When will the power be back on?”
“Sir, I’m the phone company, sitting in St. Louis. You’ll need to ask your local POWER company.”
I repeat: he was the head of their IT department.

And you’ve probably heard the jokes about the automatic coffee cup holder on the desktop computer. I actually, really and truly, got that once… and it was NOT a prank call.

Scary? Nah. Scary is the engineer who knocked out long distance dialing for half the country. Or the manager who killed ATC for the midwest.

I can confirm the file naming by coders. Dates are also written 2025-07-30.
We had someone taking notes at our developer meetings. She repeatedly got things wrong, but was dismissed after recording it as a “code suppository.”

I have that Folgers can in my freezer. When I was able to drink brewed coffee, I used to mix regular and decaf 60/40 and would sometimes forget, (early morning, half awake), the count exactly as memed. I probably shouldn’t be admitting that. ;-))
