Space cowboy reminded me – about the same time that song came out, on a whim, I bought a Cosmic Cowboy outfit. Black velvet look on the slacks and shirt, with a red glitter thread flower pattern sewn on the shirt. Wore it to a Cotton Bowl game and a few Halloween gatherings.

A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y (and W)
So, what makes a vowel a vowel? I admit that I was in my 50s before I read an exchange between a teacher and someone who actually understood.
Teacher: We’re going to drop Y as a vowel.
Expert: What? Do you know what a vowel is?
Teacher: Yes. It’s A, E, I, O, and U.
Expert: Those are vowels, but do you know what makes a “vowel” a “vowel”?
Teacher: Yes. It’s A, E, I, O, and U. (Are you dense? I just said this.)
Expert: Sigh. (No wonder kids are ignorant.) No. A vowel is a vowel because the sound is made with the mouth open. With consonants, either the tongue touches the roof of the mouth or the lips close in order to make the sound. That makes the vowels A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y and W.
Unferth: Frankly, by that definition, I’m not sure when a Y is not a vowel. Even in the word “you”, you make the Y sound with the mouth open.
