   When I was 6 or 8, my dad took us to his old college haunts. In the middle of dinner at this hamburger joint, he went to use the restroom. When he returned, he said, “okay, we’re leaving.” I dropped my burger mid bite and we left. Years later I learned some guy made a pass at him in the bathroom. My dad decked him and wanted to leave before he woke up.

   Appealing to the better nature requires the existence of a better nature. The closest thing to a success story was Gandhi’s appeal to the Brits. Wouldn’t have worked with Stalin…
