Rest in peace, Val Kilmer

Sometimes life hands you an odd coincidence. I was watching Tombstone last night and despite the fact that I really needed to get some sleep, I watched to the very end because Kilmer as Doc Holliday was so compelling. And at the end with Holliday’s death scene, I was wondering how Val was doing now since he had such a hard road with throat cancer and its aftermath.

This morning, it seems like it was a foreshadowing.

In everything from Real Genius, to Top Gun, to Willow, to The Doors, to Top Secret, to Tombstone to Thunderheart, he shined in every part he played.

  1. An amazing talent. If you’ve not seen The Salton Sea it’s worth a watch also.

He will always be…. Our Huckleberry.

  3. My wife was a big fan of Mr. Kilmer.

I told her if she ever was trapped on a island with him, I wouldn’t ask any questions.

    Hell I’d know the answer.

    RIP.

  4. Well hell, no sense in musing in the inevitability of decline, but this is disappointing to hear. I know he wasn’t doing well of late, so the news isn’t surprising, but it’s still a bummer. Mr. Kilmer did good work, and featured in a number of great movies. Personally, Real Genius is one of my favorite movies of my youth, in which we get to see him get the better of his nemesis played by William Atherton (who was always exceptional at portraying an asshole) in spectacular fashion. Godspeed, Val.

  5. My favorite Val Kilmer movie is ‘The Ghost and the Darkness’. He played along with Michael Douglas who did a good job in it as well. If you haven’t seen it yet – recommended.

    RIP Iceman.
