I have to admit to having a great amount of amusement, combined with schadenfreude watching the mainstream media twisting themselves into mental pretzels over DoGE and its nerd army.
There was a lot of discussion after the election about the fact that Gen X came to the polls and put in their votes for Trump. There’s a lot of discussion about the reason, but, as someone on the front end of the Gen X timeline, I think they’ve missed the real reasons.
It’s been posited that Gen X saw the Reagan win over Carter and internalized Reagan’s American vision. And that might be part of it. But I think that the base of it is that Gen X can’t stand being lied to combined with a predilection for chaos.
After four years of a clear basket case being paraded around like a more elaborate Weekend at Bernie’s schtick along with the State crossing that invisible line to tyranny, we’d had enough.
The generation who left out on bikes in the morning and got home in time for dinner with no cell phones and no contact with parental units, who had heroes in their movies in the original Star Wars, who had to reconcile the fact that the bad guy in Terminator was the good guy in Terminator 2, and who clearly identified with their avatar as seen in The Breakfast Club, was done with stupid and with others treating us like we were.
Because Gen X fully understood two things from Risky Business:
Every now and then say, “What the fuck.” “What the fuck” gives you freedom. Freedom brings opportunity. Opportunity makes your future.
and
In times of economic uncertainty, never ever fuck with another man’s livelihood.
We’d also had enough of political correctness and censorship. And in Trump, we saw someone who, despite being a Boomer, talked and acted like one of us. And the people around him do the same.
So when I watch the press have to say ‘Big Balls’ or watch Elon tell some chicky who thinks she has a ‘gotcha question’ because $50 million in condoms actually were for Mozambique instead of Gaza and he points out that it’s still $50 million in condoms, which is not really something the US taxpayers want to spend money on, I laugh. I applaud. Same as when Trump puts a CNN reporter in her place or Vance tells the leaders of European countries that they need to step up.
Because what the fuck? Seriously. He’s fucking with the people who fucked with our livelihoods. And that’s a good thing. And I think that’s why Gen X came out for Trump and his team.
