Another Win–School libraries and age appropriate books

So much win in so little time. On this front, the Department of Education, which I do hope is dissolved in the next couple of years, has ended the ‘book ban hoax’ of the last couple of years.

The basis of this was the false equivocation of ensuring that school libraries carry age appropriate materials with the actual banning of books. Which, of course, is not the same thing.

On Jan. 24, the department’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced the dismissal of 11 complaints related to alleged book bans in schools and rescinded guidance that suggested removing certain books from school libraries could violate civil rights laws.
The new department leadership said that decisions about school library content should be made at the local level by parents and school boards, not regulated by federal civil rights offices.

Additionally, the department ended the position of ‘book ban coordinator’ altogether.

Another interesting point was that the stated impetus was ‘restoring the rights of parents to control their children’s education’ as well as ‘ensuring local control’ over education.

Methinks this is the first step in ending the department. Which would be one of Carter’s mistakes erased.

  2. I have a friend that is a teacher who worries No Dept of Education = No Education funding.

I said so how did schools get monies before Jimmy Carter started that morass?

I believe No Dept of Education = The Same funding – Oversight from DC.

Average salary for Dept of Education is more than $112,000.00 for 4400 employees. That roughs out to more than $9,000,000 per state of additional funding if they were eliminated.
