A kid who was almost 11 years old walked a mile (gasp) into town by himself. There was wailing, gnashing of teeth, and the mother was arrested. Yep, it was a female sheriff who decided to arrest the mother at dinnertime.
DCFS also got involved. They created a ‘safety plan’. As part of that, they wanted her to download an app to monitor her son’s location. I don’t think she quite told them to pound sand, but she did not comply.
I was working in cornfields at age 11. And while I didn’t walk to the nearest small town (less than 500 people, if that), I rode my bike.
This was pre-cell phone and pre-urban legend paranoia.
I am hoping that the sheriff will lose her job at the next election cycle.
At least the kid didn’t get the Peanut treatment…
