This report was a surprise considering the source…
A UN report into ‘violence against women and girls, its causes and consequence’ found that up to 30 March 2024, ‘over 600 female athletes in more than 400 competitions have lost more than 890 medals in 29 different sports’
This goes against everything that we’ve been hearing from organizations like the NCAA, the Olympic committee, etc. They tried to minimize it by saying that ‘only a handful’ of girls were affected and that ‘hardly anyone’ was missing out on scholarships, etc.
It’s normalization writ large. First they tried to deny basic biology by saying (and some still do) that testosterone levels and cutting off body parts negates the physical advantages of growing up male. Then they tried the trope of minimalization. Then it was excoriation of anyone who dared to challenge their authority.
Just this morning, the below crossed my feed:
A total of 246 players will be competing in this week’s LPGA Qualifying Series in hopes of punching their ticket into December’s final stage of qualifying school (Q-School) to earn an opportunity to earn an LPGA card. Among the 246-player field is transgender golfer Hailey Davidson, whose inclusion may align with LPGA’s current gender policy, but not with the vast majority of fellow competitors.
Two hundred and seventy five female golfers signed a letter to the LPGA protesting their policy of allowing a male (pieces parts or not) to be part of their league.
“Competing at the highest level is the greatest honor, and thanks to our determination, years of hard work, and world class skill we have earned a shot at the prize—whether that is the opportunity to play on tour, earn eligibility for certain tournaments, improve our ranking, or come home with that victory. We deserve to strive for these rewards with a policy that recognizes fair and equitable competition for women. We hope you will stand with us and act promptly to protect the integrity of the sport that we love.”
As far as men in women’s sports went, I think they skipped Step 3 and went straight to Step 4. Anyone who speaks out (or in the case of the parents with the XX wristbands in New Hampshire, just wear a piece of clothing) is in danger of being jailed, penalized, or otherwise marginalized. Or ask the autistic girl in the UK who questioned if a bearded opponent was a man since she was in a girls’ league–she’s been essentially sidelined for the season. Or the women and girls who have been physically injured. Or who are taking the heat for not playing against men in their sport.
I’m hoping that the pendulum is now swinging back to common sense. The fact that it got as far as it did was insanity and an attempt at social programming.
