D-Day, Eighty years ago

Yes, this is the eightieth anniversary of the Normandy action to start retaking Europe, specifically France, from the Axis powers.  Allied troops landed on five beaches, but Omaha Beach saw the most casualties and the fiercest fighting.

13000 aircraft supported the action.

45000 troops (29000 from the US) were killed.

170,000 were wounded or missing.

It is important to remember these men and the cause for which they fought and died–freeing the world from fascism.

  1. Check out the illustration that Google chose to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day .I'd post it, but I'm not sure how to post photos in comments .

  2. I have family buried in the American cemetery in Normandy. Utah beach. It seems like a waste of life now.

  4. Never forget that WW1 laid the foundation for WW2. If Wilson had not provoked German attacks on shipping by transporting weapons to Britain in clear violation of the neutrality agreement with Germany, the Lusitania attack never would have happened. Without the US involvement, the war likely would have ended in a stalemate, leaving the German, French, Ottoman, and Russian empires intact. The Communist revolution in Russia might likely have never happened, the middle east would not have been carved up by the western powers thus causing so much conflict, and the Treaty of Versailles would not have devastated Germany leading to the eventual rise of someone like Hitler. Oh, then there is FDRs active provocation of war with Japan so his bankster friends could profit from a war Americans wanted nothing of.

  6. Those listed as killed were for the entire Normandy campaign that lasted for months, 6/6/44 to 8/31/44.More than 4,000 Allied troops were killed or wounded, including 2,501 Americans. (Official casualty records for June 6 1944)Still quite a sacrifice.

  7. It is sad that the USA and England would not be recognizable to those who sacrificed their lives.
