Feature, not a bug

During the covid times, laws about masking were either passed (allowing masking everywhere including banks) for ‘health’ reasons or required masks to be worn in certain places, or repealed (laws directed at the KKK to NOT allow masking in public).

Of course at the time, folks with common sense thought this was pretty stupid.  Because being able to wear a mask into a bank is just bad security, for example.

Masking has been overused–look at all of the ‘protestors’ who wear them specifically to hide their identities (like the KKK did).

As things do, finally the politicians are starting to wake up and see the chaos that being able to hide your identity from authorities can cause.  So the pendulum is swinging.

In Ohio, the AG is warning people that masking is in violation of a state law.

Axios notes that Ohio Republican Attorney General Dave Yost sent a letter to the heads of public universities in the state, warning them that students who wear a face covering at protests could be subject to felony charges under a 1953 law that was passed to stop Ku Klux Klan demonstrations.

North Carolina:

In North Carolina, its senate passed a bill that would repeal a law that allowed people to wear masks in public during the coronavirus pandemic for health reasons.

The bill also increases penalties for blocking roads, and increased penalties for crimes committed while masked.

Even in New York (who had a law against masking in public, repealed it, and are now reinstating a similar new law):

Assemblyman Michael Reilly (R-South Shore) introduced the legislation that would make it a crime to cover one’s face when engaged in protest, rally or other public assembly.

“While the right to peaceful assembly and free speech are core to our national values, the deceptive use of masks and other facial coverings pose a significant risk to public safety,” Reilly, a former NYPD lieutenant, said. “If this proposal becomes law, it will hold individuals accountable for their actions and may even deter the kinds of disruptive and violent behavior we’ve witnessed unfold at our colleges and universities.”

I find it kind of interesting that the going’s on in academia are the impetus for these changes.  NOT billions of dollars in damages being caused by ‘mostly peaceful protestors’–most of whom were masked.  It wasn’t even the asshats who throw paint and soup at priceless works of art or who block ambulances from getting to hospitals.

Allowing masking in public was stupid from the start, even without getting into the fact that they were useless for the purported purpose of health and safety.  But it was a long game strategy that’s now being called out now that most of the damage has been done.

  1. I don't ever remember laws being signed by any governor requiring masks but I remember plenty of “mandates” which are not laws and now many businesses that were forced to close have sued, and won damages. I never bothered with masks or their fake injections but I remember seeing plenty of masks carelessly thrown away on the ground in parking lots etc. Deadliest virus and pandemic evuh… Sure, fine, whatever. – WDS

  2. WDS–I was thinking the ones that were repealed and the fact that health departments were given law-like powers. The pendulum is swinging as the truth is coming out. But no one has been arrested yet, more's the pity.
