College graduation shenanigans roundup

A couple of things hit the new regarding college graduations this last weekend so I thought I’d put them all in one place.  If you heard of more, feel free to chime in in the comments.

First up:  Howard University:

Apparently Howard (a Historically Black College or University) didn’t do much in the way of advanced planning for the ceremony of its nursing students.  Because of a large graduating class and the fact that they did not give out tickets for the event, they ran out of room in the auditorium and didn’t have overflow viewing set up, apparently.  And the family members took umbrage and broke windows and pounded on the doors to the point where they shut the whole thing down.

The money quote from the Dean of the College (emphasis mine):

“Because of the size of the room, and because our relatives sometimes do not know how to act, the fire department is now here to shut us down,” Spivey-Brown said to the crowd.

Video from the NY Post here .

Next on the list, Duke University:

Students walk out on Jerry Seinfelds’s commencement speech.  And not just that, but they tried to drown him out by shouting ‘Free Palestine’.  I’m sure Mr. Seinfeld is overjoyed that he has sent TWO children to Duke and paid full freight for them.

As a note, the booing is for the self-important clods who couldn’t even shut up about their newest pet cause for twenty minutes.

And last, but by no means least, Thomas Jefferson University:

An excruciatingly horrible graduation with an announcer who is definitely functionally illiterate.  It was so bad that the president of the university publicly apologized.

It really reminded me of this:

And not really connected to graduation, we have the Pro-hamas students occupying Harvard yard who, since everyone else has gone home and the gates to the Yard being locked, have decided to call it a day.  Of course Harvard has agreed to reinstate students who were suspended and talk to them about Gaza because it’s Harvard.

  1. On the one hand, it is interesting how short sighted protesters can be in permanently turning people against them because of their antics. A few decades back, the Los Angeles teachers' union decided to do a rolling shut down of LAX by continually driving their cars through the drop off zone. Teachers stood on the curb cheering them on. I made a point of telling one of these teachers that I would forever more vote against every school bond and favor anyone politician that their union opposed — and I have kept to that. On the other hand, this is effectively low-grade terrorism by stealing someone else's day to shine — a day they worked 4 or 8 years to achieve — and if 9/11 has taught us anything, it is that terrorism works. Islam has a much stronger foothold in the west than they would have if 9/11 had not happened.

  2. Thomas Jefferson's graduation will go down as the most entertaining event in collegiate history. It did look like the graduates enjoyed the disaster.

  3. With a historically black university, you SHOULD have expected exactly what you got – violence. Every white person who has read about this incident was NOT SHOCKED I'm sure.

  6. this is what affirmative action does. so that unqualified blacks can have jobs the standards have to be lowered. this has happened in every aspect of life in America. that's why the country is in the mess it's in. instead of raising standards we have dropped them as low as they can go. the “civil rights” act of 1964 is the worst thing that has happened to America.
