A Colorado school emphasized the separation of boys and girls on a school trip. Documentation included chaperones, boys and girls being housed on separate floors in hotels, and no visits because boys and girls.
But apparently this separation didn’t include a boy who identified as a girl. An 11 year old girl was put in the awkward position of having to blow the whistle when she found that she was going to have to share a bed with a boy. She notified her mother, who was also on the trip, and the can was kicked down the road because the boy was moved into another room with another girl.
And of course the school district marginalized the girl:
“Throughout the entire evening, K.E.M.’s privacy and feelings were always the primary concern of JCPS employees,” the letter said. “After JCPS disregarded D.W.’s privacy and the Waileses’ parental rights, JCPS then silenced D.W., thus infringing on her freedom of speech, when a JCPS teacher told the three girls that they were not allowed to tell anyone that K.E.M. was transgender, even though K.E.M. voluntarily chose to share this information.”
It’s tough enough being a kid. To have adults deliberately put a child in a situation that an adult would be hard-put to deal with gracefully, is disgusting.
