Up, up, and away! Flying and Renaissance Festival

B graciously offered to fly me out of state to go see the Minnesota Renaissance Festival on Saturday.

It is a HUGE venue–more like shopping with some folks in costume than other Faires I’ve been to, but considering it’s an eight or more hour drive by car, I never would have seen it otherwise.  (Aaron–definitely worth the flight…..)

It was so huge that I wasn’t up for another trip around the venue so we left out earlier than expected.

Which put us in the middle of the line of storms that came through from Mississippi to Minnesota yesterday (B had thought that we’d take more time so would come out behind the storms).

Amidst dodging the storm fronts and some technical difficulties (both of which B handled wicked smooth to the point that ATC did not not that he was flying conventional, instead of using GPS at certain points).

Had some re-routing, climbing, and course deviations to avoid big convections.  (It certainly did not help me to remember Old NFO’s story about running in a hurricane that he told last Thursday.)

But I got some awesome pictures.

ETA:  Check out B’s post over at Middle of the Right.  He was awesome and kept us out of the bouncy stuff.

Planet killer from Star Trek
Not from the flight

The line of storms

Kind of looked like an angel standing on the cloud

Should have gotten video with this one, the clouds were literally boiling up

In the clear

Godzilla in the clouds

Thanks to B for a great time!  And for helping me to learn how to use the autopilot and comms!  I really enjoy being a part of the flight rather than just a passenger!

  1. Matthew–I was really great! I'm pretty sure we flew over your neck of the woods during one of the deviations. It's very cool watching B keeping ahead of the plane, especially in that type of weather. They were even diverting the big boys around it.

  2. Be still my heart! You know what a planet killer from Star Trek is! That sounded like fun! Glad you could fly with him. I too am not fond at all being a cattle in the back and don't. Now, up in front flying, I am game. So did B have to order more fuel on the return trip due to all the trinkets you attained at the faire?

  3. Cederq—Are there people who don’t? I am pretty sure I could understudy every single episode of the Original series—all parts. We went under the planet killers tail, and that was very cool. Aside from some mint Heinlein (Bs fav) and Poul Anderson paperbacks (mine), I was pretty good. I bought a neck knife instead of a scimitar so saved some weight there and am still kicking myself for passing on a ring (fiscal responsibility kicks in at the worst time). And a 340 with only two passengers can carry quite a bit, even with full fuel.

  4. The storm riding wasn't your fault, I am PIC, so it was my decision to go rather than wait. It just changed the plans, that's all.

  6. Used to regularly attend the Original Renaissance Faire in Sterling Forest NY. It was amazing and I miss it immensely. We had a nice one in Ft Myers but the County Park Commission TRIPLED the rent and killed it. Good on ya for going!

  7. Boneman–My first Ren Faire was King Richard's Faire in MA. I always hit the Bristol Ren Faire in WI at least once in the season (usually the first day). From what I heard at the MN Festival, they had to do some changes to parking otherwise the county wasn't going to give them a permit.

  9. I use to go to the Ren Faires down by Eugene,OR with a gal that was really into those and was a member of SCA and would dress the part. I must say I enjoyed it, especially those gals that dressed up as tavern wenches…
